Description:Silicosis is a lung disease caused by breathing in small particles of silica (Figure 1). Silica is a common mineral found in many rocks, stones, and sand. Working with materials that contain silica can create silica dust which can enter the lungs and cause inflammation and scarring, making it difficult to breathe. Silicosis typically occurs after breathing in silica dust for 10 or more years. Silicosis can also develop after breathing in large amounts of silica for only a few months or years.
