Description:Organic production is one of the fastest growing sectors in US agriculture. Sales rose 31% between 2016 and 2019. The number of female producers, new and beginning producers and certified operations has also grown exponentially over the past decade making the organic farming industry a social, economic and public health priority. However, very little data exists on organic producers' health status or the psychosocial and contextual factors that may influence their health and safety. Although federal and state surveillance systems collect data on occupational injury and illness, current systems do not categorize the organic farmer. The Organic Farmers Safety, Health, and Life Survey (OFSHLS) aimed to collect information on work and life experiences of organic producers. Informed by the socioecological model, the OFSHLS is an innovative tool that integrates domains of work and life and identifies multilevel factor that may contribute to occupational safety and health. The tool showed acceptable psychometric properties across key domains (Cronbach's Alpha 0.80) and was administered to 100+ USDA certified organic farmers in the SW Ag region. Results indicate that organic farmers may have a lower perception of risk compared to conventional farming and other occupations; lower compliance with safety recommendations and equipment; and higher level of stress related to family problems, illness/health, and isolation. Nearly 80% were "somewhat or "very concerned about their own health. A very high majority of participants reported satisfaction with life and work. Information gathered through the OFSHLS describes and typifies the organic producer, and may contribute to injury prevention education and policy. This presentation will explore the interdependence of home, community, and work life; describe the multiple dimensions of the OFSHLS; and present the results of a cross-sectional study with a sample of certified organic producers.
