• Description:
  A study was performed to determine the attitudes of residents of the anthracite coal region of northeastern Pennsylvania toward mine- related fire and attendant environmental problems and to review current solid-waste-disposal practices. Particular attention was given to the indiscriminate disposal of solid wastes in abandoned strip mines, a known contributor to mine-fire ignition. Community leaders, 500 residents, and representative waste collectors were interviewed. It was concluded that means should be developed to prevent access to abandoned stripping areas and that an environmental awareness educational program among both adults and school-aged youth should be developed using television, newspapers, and school curricula adaptations.
