Description:The reduction of the noise exposure of operators of mobile surface mine equipment has been a primary objective of the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 25,000 mobile equipment operators in U.S. surface coal mines (45 pet of the operators) are overexposed to noise. These mobile machines include bulldozers, front-end loaders, haulers, shovels, draglines, trucks, scrapers, drills, and motor graders. Bull-dozers and front-end loaders cause about two-thirds of the noise overexposures. The most cost-effective operator noise exposure control was determined to be acoustical cabs.
