  A brief review of OSHA inspection results was offered to assist in evaluating the value of workplace inspections in the control of occupational disease. The OSHA Integrated Management Information System was used to review the results of OSHA compliance activity. This system contained a record of each inspection conducted over the history of OSHA. This review considered the breadth of compliance activity, the evaluation of industry compliance, lead (7439921) and silica (14808607) overexposures, and listed new approaches to facilitate OSHA's inspection efforts. Hazard surveillance recommendations for OSHA were listed, including collection, analysis and use of data currently required to be collected under existing standards; promulgation of a generic standard to requires industry to conduct environmental monitoring for a wider range of substances; consideration of how data from the Hazard Communication Standard can be collected, evaluated and used as a basis for setting inspection priorities; enact laws that require reporting of occupational diseases such as silicosis or excessive blood lead levels; establish an evaluative mechanism to determine the effectiveness of its compliance effort; and focus enforcement activities.
