    Quantitative studies on the behavioral effects of drugs in the mouse were reviewed, with emphasis on strain differences in the response to drugs, the use of schedule controlled behavior techniques in the mouse, and the effects of drugs on schedule controlled behavior in the mouse. As strain differences in the behavioral affects of drugs have been most widely studied on spontaneous motor activity (SMA), the effects of a few prototype drugs on SMA were discussed. Strain differences in the effects of drugs on SMA were considered with specific information provided on the effects of d-amphetamine with its relationship to differences in control behavior, and morphine, where the effects cannot be accounted for by known behavior differences. Schedule controlled behavior in the mouse was also reviewed, including the responses used, the events used to maintain responding, and schedules of reinforcement provided. Effects of drugs on the schedule controlled behavior in the mouse were reviewed. According to the author, as the mouse offers many practical advantages for experimental work, it is likely that it will become an increasingly important species in behavioral pharmacology and toxicology.
