Description:During a walkthrough survey of a food processing facility, potential aspartame (53906697) exposure was noted as employees weighed, blended, and packaged dry dessert mixes. A method was subsequently developed for sampling the content of aspartame in the air. The collection system used portable high flow air pumps and was suitable for both personal and area air sampling in industrial settings. Samples were collected on 1.0 micron pore size, 37 milliliter diameter polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filters with a polyethylene backing. High pressure liquid chromatography was used for the analysis. Excellent recovery from PTFE filters was achieved in laboratory and field testing. Aspartame did not migrate nor decompose on the filter during sampling or when stored at ambient temperatures for a month. No special precautions for handling or storage were recommended. During a health hazard evaluation of aspartame exposure at a food packaging facility, 66 personal and area air samples were collected using this method. No interferences were found from food additives collected with aspartame during field sampling. The authors conclude that this method, with small adjustments, can be used to sample most dipeptides in air. [Description provided by NIOSH]
