Description:Technical provisions for the sloping and shoring of the banks of trenches and excavations were recommended on the basis of studies conducted by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). Recommended standard practices for trenching were included which can be used by construction supervisors and compliance officers of OSHA. Proposed engineering guidelines were offered for the design of shoring systems and other means to prevent mass movements of soil or rock during excavations. Commentary was offered on the standard practices of sloped excavations, strength of shoring systems, loads acting on shoring systems, soil classification, spaced sheeting, and recommended special provisions such as shoring both trenches near a trench intersection, permitting some excavation below the bottom of sheeting, and placing objects and construction equipment near the edge of excavations. Diagrams were included of the components of shoring systems, the effect of foundation loads on shoring, allowable configurations of sloped excavations, loads acting on shoring systems, loads tributary to members of the shoring system, symbols used in derivation of the equation for the sloped backfill effects, comparison of proposed equations, effects of heavy construction equipment, and dimensions used in the derivation of simplified expressions for heavy equipment effects.
