Description:The age related decline in auditory performance, or presbycusis, was reviewed and discussed. Topics reviewed included: anatomy and physiology of the cochlea and central auditory pathway; laboratory animal models of presbycusis; age related structural losses in humans; age related changes in brainstem evoked response; interaction of aging and noise; hearing levels in subjects with military and industrial noise exposure; environmental noise exposure; racial and sex differences in hearing levels; pathogenesis of presbycusis; the prevalence of age related auditory dysfunction; epidemiological studies; and multidisciplinary investigation of age related auditory dysfunction.
