Occurrence of occupational asthma

  A hospital based study of the incidence of occupational asthma among adult asthmatics was conducted. A total of 202 patients (43 men and 157 women) discharged from three hospitals in Detroit, Flint, and Lansing, Michigan in 1990 with a primary diagnosis of asthma were contacted in the summer of 1991 with a request to be interviewed to determine if their asthma was occupationally or nonoccupationally related. Ninety four subjects agreed to participate and were interviewed by questionnaire. Questionnaire responses were reviewed by an occupational medicine physician to determine if the patients' asthma was of probable or possible occupational origin using NIOSH criteria. Three patients (3.2%) met the criteria for having probable occupational asthma and 17 (18.1%) met the criteria for having possible occupational asthma. After adjusting for differential responses from the three hospitals and assuming that none of the noninterviewed patients had probable or possible occupational asthma, the overall prevalence of occupational asthma in the state of Michigan was estimated to be 9.9%. If one assumed that the noninterviewed patients had the same prevalence of probable or possible occupational asthma as the interviewed patients, the overall prevalence of occupational asthma in Michigan was 20.2%. Further studies using a larger population and a wider selection of patients from other hospitals is necessary to determine an exact estimate of occupational asthma in Michigan.
