Notes from the field: agricultural injury prevention: a farm-church partnership

  A farm and church community partnership sensitive to cultural values was investigated as a model for agricultural injury prevention programs. The project sought to increase awareness of the hazards of agricultural work and was piloted in a 500 member rural community in Mercer County, Kentucky. There were over 1000 farms in the area and multiple generations labored together. Fourteen local agencies participated in the project. Church members identified farm safety as a priority concern through a needs assessment conducted by the church's parish health ministry. Interviews with local farmers revealed concerns for worker and family safety, but there was little knowledge on how to decrease risks. The church provided a readily accessible and acceptable place for presenting the project. Exhibits and demonstrations were used. Age specific modules targeted injury prevention for each high risk category. Children and adults participated in learning experiences for the former and seminars for the latter. Each family was given a farm walk about survey to complete. Awareness of health hazards increased and led to a farm safety project being designed as a community service. The farm and church partnership was invited to countrywide farm tours to present educational seminars. The author concludes that the creation of community partnerships centered in rural churches provides a new avenue for reaching large numbers of farm residents in a cost effective manner.
