Description:A study was conducted on the mortality rates of workers exposed to perfluorooctanoic-acid (335671) (PFOA). Workers at a chemical factory that produced PFOA were categorized as exposed or nonexposed, and the numbers of cause specific deaths were compared to expected numbers. The standardized mortality ratios for all causes of death for all women employees as well as for exposed women employees were significantly lower than expected. Similar results were seen for male employees. No associations were seen for male employees between any cause of death and length of employment. A standardized mortality ratio of 2.03 for prostate cancer was seen for exposed males compared with 0.58 for nonexposed males. A weak but significant positive association was seen between exposure and prostate cancer risk and the risk increased with length of employment. A positive association was seen as well between age at first employment and prostate cancer mortality. [Description provided by NIOSH]
