Mesothelioma among employees with likely contact with in-place asbestos-containing building materials

Description:During a review of death certificates for 487 cases of mesothelioma in Wisconsin from 1959 through 1989, 41 persons with likely exposure to in place asbestos (1332214) containing building materials (ACBM) were identified. Of these 41 persons, 12 were school teachers, ten were school maintenance workers, seven were public building maintenance workers, five were private building maintenance workers, and seven were commercial and factory workers performing maintenance tasks. The diagnosis, occupational history and asbestos exposure information was obtained from the Cancer Reporting System and medical records. Questionnaires and telephone interviews were used to obtain information on employment history and possible sources of asbestos exposure. Information on public employees was obtained from personnel and pension fund offices. Of the 29 maintenance workers, the only exposure to asbestos for ten of them occurred in connection with their maintenance activities. Twenty three of these maintenance workers were involved in plumbing, carpentry, painting, electrical work, and pipe boiler repair. For nine of the 12 school teachers, asbestos exposure came as a result of ACBM which was in place at their work site. [Description provided by NIOSH]
