Description:The results of a preliminary investigation concerning the application of high speed gas chromatography (GC) to the measurement of aromatic vapors of toluene (108883), benzene (71432), and xylene (1330207) in air at threshold limit value (TLV) and sub/TLV concentrations were reported. The features of this system included a gas cooled, electrically heated, capillary cold trap which focuses the sample as an extremely narrow band in the front of the column. A comparison was made between the measurements taken with this fast GC method and those obtained using a conventional GC method. The fast GC decreased retention times by a factor of 10 to 100 fold relative to the conventional GC for determinations at concentrations ranging from the TLV to one tenth of the TLV. No loss of precision or accuracy was noted. The authors suggest that it may be feasible to develop a high speed monitoring system based on a GC design similar to the one presented in this investigation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
