Description:A new method for gas chromatographic separation was described and tested for its ability to perform in the high speed analysis of air samples. This new system, fast gas chromatography (fast GC), was evaluated for its limit of detection (LOD), the linearity of detection, and it ability to analyze 41 different organic compounds as mixtures of vapors in the air. The high speed of this method was made possible by the use of a high speed injection system having a cold trap which results in a very narrow injection band. For all of the compounds tested (aromatic hydrocarbons, nonaromatic compounds, and freons), the LOD was in the parts per billion range, and the detection was linear to this point. The authors conclude that fast GC is a practical method for air monitoring. The number of compounds which may separated by this method (as with other forms of GC) is limited by their boiling point, polarity, and thermal lability. Because the chromatography is carried out isothermally, separation efficiency is limited. [Description provided by NIOSH]
