Manganese exposure in the manufacture of plywood: an unsuspected health hazard

  An investigation was conducted to determine the incidence of manganese (7439965) exposure and its possible health effects on workers in the wood products industry. The operational processes of the plywood mill under study was described. The toxicology of manganese was discussed in relation to occupational exposure. An industrial hygiene analysis was conducted in which samples of worker personal breathing zone air, local air, fly ash, settled dust and sawdust were collected and analyzed for manganese concentration. In addition, ten employees (average age 45 years) were interviewed to identify health complaints, work practices and workplace safety perceptions. Personal air monitoring of plywood mill employees indicated that manganese dust exposure registered below the NIOSH personal exposure limit of 1mg/m3. Area air sample manganese levels averaged 0.001mg/m3, while bulk samples varied from 40 micrograms per gram (microg/g) to 30,000microg/g. No workers reported any symptoms suggestive of manganese toxicity. The author concludes from these findings that exposure to manganese containing dust constitutes a potential health hazard to workers in the wood products industry and offers recommendations to reduce occupational inhalation exposures.
