III. Development of a standard questionnaire for occupational health research

  Developing a standard questionnaire for occupational research was discussed. The need for a standardized questionnaire in direct worker surveys was considered. A standardized questionnaire consisting of a set of predetermined questions presented in a definite unvarying order may be needed to provide strict control over interviewer behavior. Without such standardized methods, intra and intersurvey variations may occur, making it impossible to pool or reliably compare data obtained in separate surveys. It was noted that a standardized questionnaire was being developed by NIOSH to improve the reproducibility of data collection and facilitate comparing data obtained in different surveys. This would enable direct worker surveys to be used as a means of medical surveillance for exposed populations. Criteria for work related conditions to be included on the questionnaire were reviewed. The features of the questionnaire were described. The questionnaire was designed to collect demographic and occupational history information and diagnostic information on ten categories of work related conditions: dermatoses; mucosal irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; respiratory system disorders; liver disorders; kidney conditions; neurotoxic disorders; noise induced hearing loss; adverse reproductive outcome; and occupational injuries. Additional sections will be developed that address cardiovascular conditions and psychological conditions. [Description provided by NIOSH]
