High-risk notification of chromate and bichromate production workers

  A notification program was instituted to make 4862 former chromate and bichromate production workers aware of the dangers of their past exposure. An earlier study determined that this exposure cohort suffered a 29 fold increase in respiratory cancer. Four factories in New Jersey and one factory in Texas were included in this study. Social Security Administration records were used to compile the cohort. Mailings by the Internal Revenue Service were used to locate individuals. Additional information was obtained through the New Jersey Health Department, the New Jersey State Department of Taxation, Social Security records, local phone books, New Jersey motor vehicle records, the National Death Index, and information from fellow workers. Identified subjects were mailed a letter, a fact sheet and a questionnaire. The study was ongoing; 1,414 questionnaires had been received and 1,711 deceased workers were identified. The future plans included notifying workers who have been located of the results of the mortality study and working with members of this cohort to offer them an opportunity to participate in a program to study early detection techniques for lung cancer.
