Description:Estimates of exposure were derived for a cohort of about 26,000 workers for an investigation of the mortality of workers exposed to acrylonitrile (107131). Job Exposure Profiles (a data management system) and a database containing almost 19,000 air monitoring results were combined using a computerized interactive exposure assessment program (EAP). The EAP and its validity were discussed. Monitoring results were sorted by this program into various subfiles based on their quantity and quality. The EAP directly calculated job/department means of the monitoring results for each time period over which there were no significant changes that affected exposure levels in the workplace when the monitoring results met specified criteria. When the monitoring results available did not meet the criteria, the user was allowed to select from various estimation methods available in the EAP. From these data and other information provided to the EAP by the user, the EAP calculated the estimates for the job of interest. The program provided a structured mechanism for developing historical exposure estimates which at the same time allowed the user to have access to a variety of estimation methods based on the data which were available. The authors suggest that this type of program can be used in other retrospective epidemiologic studies where limited monitoring data is found. [Description provided by NIOSH]
