Description:The management at Great Lakes Research Corporation (GLRC), Elizabethton, Tennessee, requested the NIOSH regional office to provide technical assistance in measuring airborne acrylonitrile (107131) which might be found at this facility. GLRC produced carbon fibers by a process involving the pyrolysis of Orlon, a polymer of acrylonitrile. GLRC also applied latex sizing solutions to some of the carbon fibers. Some of the latex sizes contained resins of butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymers. Area and personal exposure air samples were taken. Bulk samples of orlon fiber were analyzed for acrylonitrile monomer content. No detectable acrylonitrile was found. No significant or detectable acrylonitrile was likely to be generated under the conditions of use observed at GLRC during this investigation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
