  • Description:
The performance of the newly developed reagent, 1-(9- anthracenylmethyl)piperazine (MAP) was evaluated in a spray painting operation. Comparisons were made with 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine (MOP), the reagent currently used in sampling. Area samples of airborne 1,6-hexamethylene-diisocyanate (822060) (HDI) and polyisocyanates were collected, using two impingers filled with MAP and one filled with MOP, positioned close together in an area of overspray. Samples were collected at a rate of 1.0 liters per minutes for 10 to 63 minutes. The ultraviolet detector response was used to analyze the area samples. HDI monomer concentrations were below the detection limit of both sampling methods, whereas the polyisocyanate concentrations were detected with both MAP and MOP reagents. The analytical sensitivity of the HDI/MAP urea was about five times greater than that of the HDI/MOP urea. The HDI/MOP and HDI/MAP ureas had detection limits of 0.1 and 0.03 micrograms per milliliter, respectively. The analytical sensitivity of polyisocyanate MAP ureas was about six times greater than that of the polyisocyanate MOP ureas. Measured by the polyisocyanate MAP urea response, the polyisocyanate concentration in air varied between 1.1 and 6.3mg/m3. The concentration measured by the polyisocyanate MOP urea response ranged from 1.4 to 4.6mg/m3. All values exceeded the short term exposure limit of 1mg/m3. A high positive correlation coefficient was observed between the two sampling reagents. The authors conclude that there are no significant differences between the polyisocyanate sampling performances of the reagents MAP and MOP. [Description provided by NIOSH]
