Description:The results of Round 5 of the Environmental Lead Proficiency Analytical Testing (ELPAT) Program conducted in November, 1993 were reported. The ELPAT Program has been conducted by the American Industrial Hygiene Association in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control, NIOSH, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to evaluate the performance of laboratories involved in lead (7439921) analyses. Participating laboratories analyzed samples of paint chips, soil, and dust wipes for lead and the reported results were compared with those obtained from reference laboratories. Less than 9.9% of all participating laboratory analyses were identified as outliers. The most common sample digestion techniques used included hot plate and microwave processes and flame atomic absorption, graphite furnace atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma/atomic emission spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence were some of the instrumental methods used. A laboratory that used inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry for all of their analyses met performance limits for all samples while two laboratories using X-ray fluorescence were inconsistent in meeting acceptable performance limits. A summary of the results of the previous round of ELPAT was presented and the establishment of the EPA National Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program was described. [Description provided by NIOSH]
