Description:A database program for controlling the inventory of a field support equipment laboratory was described. The program was developed for the field support laboratory of the Engineering Control Technology Branch (ECTB) of NIOSH. The ECTB was responsible for developing, evaluating, and storing engineering and industrial hygiene equipment used in performing surveys at industrial, agricultural, medical, and other field locations. The database program for tracking ECTB equipment was developed because with the small number of ECTB personnel (around 20) and the occasional loaning of equipment to other NIOSH branches and divisions and separate organizations, a more efficient system was needed. The program was managed and operated by the ECTB laboratory coordinator. It used dBase-III Plus, version 1.1, as the programming language, which was supplemented by the PFS: Professional Write Word Processing program. The database program was bar code driven. The program was designed to provide a computerized process for loaning out and returning equipment, an ongoing assessment of expendable equipment quantities and to indicate when the stock quantity was too low, to maintain a list of all expendable and nonexpendable equipment, maintain a list of authorized users, and to maintain vendor information for each expendable item to facilitate reordering. Details for using the program were presented. [Description provided by NIOSH]
