Description:Anodic stripping voltammetry was studied as a means of eliminating polyatomic interference during the determination of hexavalent chromium (7440473) and pentavalent vanadium (7440622) in complex samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. An anodic stripping voltammetry flow system was used in conjunction with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Contaminants were eliminated and the signal enhanced by preconcentration performed on line. Analysis was performed on certified water samples and National Institute of Standards and Technology urine samples. The results indicated that in certified water samples, correct values for chromium(VI) were obtained. Spikes of chromium(VI) were determined in National Institute of Standards and Technology urine samples, while vanadium(V) results were in good agreement with quoted values. Recovery was better in water than in urine. Polyatomic species were effectively eliminated. The authors conclude that anodic stripping voltammetry can be used as an on line method improving spectrometric detection. [Description provided by NIOSH]
