Description:A gas chromatographic method for determining acrolein (107028) in air using an oxazolidine derivatization procedure was developed. Air samples containing acrolein were collected in glass tubes packed with XAD-2 sorbent coated with 10% 2-(hydroxymethyl)piperidine (OHMP). The acrolein reacted with OHMP to produce oxazolidine. The oxazolidine was desorbed by extraction with toluene and ultrasonication for 30 minutes. Aliquots of the extract were injected into a gas chromatographic system containing a 5% SP-2401- DB column and a nitrogen specific thermionic detector. Recovery experiments using samples spiked with 0.11, 0.29, and 1.5mg/m3 acrolein produced average recoveries of 127, 97, and 100%, respectively. Samples containing 0.11mg/m3 acrolein and 5mg/m3 acetaldehyde were collected and stored at room temperature for 1, 14, or 28 days before analysis to assess sample stability. The acrolein concentrations found after 1, 14, and 28 days storage were equivalent. The overall relative standard deviation for samples containing 0.13 to 1.50mg/m3 acrolein was 11.1%. The authors conclude that the procedure is straightforward and does not require special precautions when collecting field samples for shipment back to a laboratory for analysis.
