Benzene exposure assessment in rubber hydrochloride workers: a critical evaluation of previous estimates

  Literature findings regarding benzene (71432) exposure risk assessment in rubber hydrochloride workers were evaluated. Specific topics that were addressed included: critique of premises that affect derived benzene exposure estimates (work practices, engineering controls, other factors); evidence of engineering controls in the rubber hydrochloride industry; dermal absorption of benzene in rubber hydrochloride workers; representativeness of benzene samples; detector tube accuracy in estimating benzene concentrations; combustible gas indicator accuracy in estimating benzene concentrations; and TLV ratio method. A recent study used selected information to adjust previously reported benzene exposure estimates for rubber hydrochloride workers. Multiple adjustments based on worst case scenarios were made which led to retrospective estimated annual benzene exposure estimates that were in some cases almost an order of magnitude greater than actual measurements. In addition, these exposure estimates conflicted with the degree of adverse effects actually observed in the cohort. The authors conclude that previously reported NIOSH benzene exposure estimates for rubber hydrochloride workers are most consistent with the available information about conditions that prevail in the manufacturing process.
