  An overview of the current concepts and practices used in the assessment of occupational risks was provided. Regulations governing occupational safety and health standards have been established by OSHA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration and NIOSH. Determination of such standards has depended to an increasing extent on the quantification of risks, a development that has brought the need for risk assessment methods into sharper focus. Occupational risk assessment may require determination of chemical, biologic, psychologic and physical hazards, as well as models to predict the probability of adverse health effects. Information on exposure levels and dose/response effects must be incorporated in risk characterization. Hazard exposure assessments may be conducted for both small groups of workers, and for the entire workforce. An uncertainty factor technique has been used to determine permissible hazard exposure levels. The risk assessment methods described could provide a basis for the development of occupational health and safety standards. [Description provided by NIOSH]
