Asbestos screening and education programs for building and construction trades unions

  This report offered a general description and historical overview of asbestos (1332214) screening and education programs for members of trade unions. High risk asbestos exposed union members in the International Union of Elevator Constructors and the Laborers' International Union of North America were screened. Medical screening programs were limited for participation to those in general with more than 20 years in the program. Screening programs were provided in community based clinics or doctors' offices. The minimal medical components of the screening program included administration of a standardized questionnaire, limited physical examination, chest examination, examination for clubbing of digits, and lung function. Information was disseminated concerning asbestos related disease, safe work practices, future medical needs, smoking cessation, and legal rights. A positive outcome of this study was the development of a national program for notifying, screening and educating high risk asbestos exposed union members. [Description provided by NIOSH]
