Description:The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits private employers, state and local governments, employment agencies, and labor unions from discriminating against disabled individuals, who are otherwise qualified, in hiring, firing, promotion, compensation, and training. A major requirement of the ADA is that jobs be analyzed to determine the essential functions of the job and that all job functions be quantified to facilitate the establishment of clinical means to determine the ability of applicants to perform these tasks. The physical abilities of the applicant must be compared to the requirements of the job to determine if the applicant has the ability to perform the job. If the applicant has the ability to perform the job it must be determined if there is direct threat or " ... a significant risk of substantial harm to the health or safety of the individual or others which can not be eliminated or reduced by reasonable accommodation". An understanding of ergonomics is essential to quantify the task requirements in such a way that the applicant's ability to perform the job and exposure to "direct threat" can be assessed.
