Description:A new approach for evaluating pit slope stability by the limiting equilibrium method has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The finite element method of plane strain analysis is used to find the stress field of the pit slope structure. This stress field is then used to find the normal and shear stresses along a potential failure surface. The normal stresses are used with the coulomb equation to calculate the shear resistance. The shear stresses are integrated to determine the total driving force. The factor of safety is evaluated from the ratio of the resisting force to the driving force along a failure surface and is found to be affected by the elastic material properties, modulus of elasticity, and poisson's ratio.
