Description:Cellulose nano-crystals and fibrils (CNC/CNF) are gaining prominence as nano structured material with production volumes forecasted to reach 780 tons per annum by 2017. Knowledge of the toxicologic properties, actual worker exposure and resulting risk is lacking. Proceeding in a responsible manner with the development of this material requires a cautious risk-based approach to management of CNC/CNFs in the workplace. In order to realize the full potential of this versatile class of materials, it is important to know the potential occupational health risks, if any, and how to manage them properly and effectively. In response to this challenge, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), has collaborated with the US Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), to start the process of understanding the scope of workplace health and safety risks associated with exposure to CNC/CNF. Field work has involved development of a risk management strategy that includes evaluation of the entire material flow of the production process, identification of potential material emission points that could result in worker exposure and completion of exposure characterization field studies. This presentation will provide the tools to understand how to effectively manage potential worker exposures at CNC/CNF production facilities. [Description provided by NIOSH]
