Description:The effect of batch lot variability on nitrile glove permeation data was examined. Four batches of gloves manufactured by Ansell Edmont and MAPA were obtained from various suppliers. Nitrile glove samples were exposed to 2-ethoxyethanol-acetate (111159), which served as the permeant. A gravimetric analytical technique was used to determine the breakthrough detection time (BDT) and the steady state permeation rate (SSPR). Differential scanning calorimetry was applied to the calculation of the glass transition temperature (Tg). The mean cumulative permeation mass and the mean SSPR differed significantly within and between the manufacturers. BDT batch means did not differ significantly. While the Tgs varied significantly among the Ansell Edmont glove batches, they did not vary markedly among the MAPA glove batches. The authors conclude that the substantial batch lot and intermanufacturer variability in nitrile glove permeation most likely results from manufacturer quality control. Because the Tg is not associated with the permeation parameters, factors other than cure time and temperature are related to the batch lot variability. Published permeation data should be employed as guidelines only. [Description provided by NIOSH]
