Description:The safe wearing periods were determined for lined nitrile, Silver Shield laminate, and Viton gloves for challenges by the pesticide emulsifiable concentrates Lorsban-4E containing chlorpyrifos (2921882) and Thiodan-3-EC containing endosulfan (115297). Material cut from the palm of a glove was mounted in an ASTM type PTC permeation cell, with hexane on the collection side and a pesticide solution on the challenge side. It took 2 hours for endosulfan to break through nitrile, while chlorpyrifos required 2.5 hours. The alkylbenzene inert components penetrated after 20 minutes, suggesting an inert component facilitated transport mechanism for the pesticide with differential breakthrough. Two steady state periods were observed with both pesticides in their cumulative mass versus time permeation curves. The second steady state permeation rate was five to seven times the rate of the first, the average rates for the latter being 580+/-250, 809+/-70, and 430+/-35 nanograms/square centimeter/minute, respectively for chlorpyrifos, alpha-endosulfan, and beta-endosulfan. Silver Shield and Viton gloves did not allow pesticide or inert component permeation over 480 minutes, and are therefore recommended for hand protection over nitrile. [Description provided by NIOSH]
