  Dermal risk assessment is becoming an important issue in regulatory toxicology. As the inhalational exposure to hazardous substances is more effectively controlled, the exposure through the skin contributes increasingly to the overall exposure and health risk. On September 8-11, 2002, NIOSH organized the international conference "Occupational and Environmental Exposures of Skin to Chemicals: Science and Policy" in Washington, DC. The aim was to bring together scientists with different areas of expertise (dermatologists, industrial hygienists, laboratory researchers, policy makers, and occupational physicians) to focus on the science, knowledge gaps, and policy opportunities related to the occupational and environmental exposures of skin to chemicals. Session II of the conference was dedicated to the identification of adverse health effects resulting from skin contact with toxic substances. This article reports the findings from the plenary/poster sessions and workshop of Session II on the current research efforts in evaluating skin exposure hazards and the effective actions for exposure prevention and control.
