Description:

Occupational respiratory diseases resulting from the inhalation of dusts generated in working environments have been recognized for centuries. The effects of asbestos, silica, coal, and cotton dusts, for instance, are well documented, although mechanisms for disease initiation and progression are not yet fully understood. At present, despite the availability of improved air sampling techniques and dust control methods, disease persists. [Description provided by NIOSH]
