Description:Front drive mowers are often operated on a slope where operators are subjected to potential continuous roll conditions. The continuous roll increases the operator fatality. The recently approved ASAE Standard S547 "Tip-Over Protective Structure (TOPS) for Front Wheel Drive Turf and Landscape Equipment" addresses a continuous roll prediction model for ROPS design. The existing model described in this standard does not take into account the influence of the mower deck on the rollover behavior. Previous lateral upset tests indicate the mower deck influences the rollover behavior, therefore, this project involves evaluating the accuracy of the existing continuous roll model and modifying it to include the mower deck. By changing the ROPS height, the roll behavior can be changed from continuous roll to non-continuous roll. The critical ROPS height (CRH) is defined as the ROPS height required stopping the continuous roll. Using the revised model, CRH is determined and compared to actual roll tests. Field tests show the revised model is effective in simulating the mower roll behavior. Tests were conducted on F925 front drive mower; CRH predicted by the existing model is 2.17 m. The 2.6 m of CRH height determined by the revised model is approximately same as 2.55 m of CRH determined by field test. [Description provided by NIOSH]
