Health alert: workers in highway/road construction zones must wear high-visibility garments

  Motor vehicle-related incidents are the leading cause of work-related fatalities in the United States. Of approximately 5,700 fatalities reported annually by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 35% are associated with motor vehicles. From 2002-2008, approximately: 1354 workers died each year from crashes on public highways. 324 workers died each year in crashes that occurred off the highway or on industrial premises. 358 pedestrian workers died each year as a result of being struck by a motor vehicle. High visibility is one of the most prominent needs for workers who perform tasks near moving vehicles or equipment. The need to be seen by those who operate vehicles or equipment is recognized as a critical issue for worker safety. The sooner a worker in or near the path of travel is seen, the more time the operator has to avoid an accident. The Department of Public Health strongly recommends that anyone who performs work in, or as part of their job passes through, areas where any type of vehicle traffic is present protect themselves with high-visibility apparel.
