  Through Nursing Research Center Core Grants (P30) and Exploratory Center Grants (P20), the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) has provided funding to research centers across the country. These research centers encompass both clinical and basic areas of nursing research. The goal of Center Core Grants is to provide the infrastructure needed to centralize resources and facilities that will support active research centers in specific areas of scientific inquiry that have established bases of research funding.1 The purpose of the Exploratory Center Grants is to increase the number of research intensive schools by facilitating the development of these schools' infrastructure and enhancing specific areas of inquiry through a base of research funding. Currently, 9 Core Centers and 9 Exploratory Centers are funded across the country. The Center for Research on Cardiovascular and Respiratory Health (CRCRH) was established at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing (UIC-CON) in 2001 through the Exploratory Center Grant funding mechanism. The goals of this center are to (1) advance the science of cardiovascular and respiratory health, (2) reduce disparities in disease/ illness, and (3) support research training by providing core services and resources to investigators.
