Approaches to Reducing Back Stress for Nursing Personnel

  The problem of work-related back injuries is significant in nursing. Klein, et al. (1984) found the back injury rates for nursing personnel rank with those of high risk workers such as dock workers. These authors further cited that of the nursing personnel, nursing assistants in long-term care facilities (nursing homes) were at greatest risk for work-related back injuries. In 1989, Jensen et al., conducted a review of the literature in relation to back injuries in nursing personnel: they located, categorized, and annotated 90 manuscripts. Almost half of the research studies were cross-sectional surveys. Only a few studies used an experimental design and most of these were carried out in a laboratory setting. The purpose of the present study was to determine methods for transferring patients that were less stressful than the present methods used by nursing assistants. Prior to this study, nursing assistants in a nursing home identified those patient handling tasks they felt were most stressful (Owen & Garg, 1989), an ergonomic study was completed within that nursing home (Carlson, 1989), and assistive devices were studied to determine which should be used in an attempt to decrease stress while carrying" out these stressful patient handling tasks (Owen & Garg, 1990). In the present study, the investigators studied eight different methods for carrying out each of the patient handling tasks rated as most stressful by the nursing assistants. This part of the study took place in a laboratory setting. Results from this study were then applied in the nursing home. [Description provided by NIOSH]
