Description:The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is establishing a web-based dialogue on issues pertaining to the safe management of nanotechnologies. A key feature of this new page will be the ability for readers to provide ideas, comments, case studies, and recommendations, and to respond to information solicitations. It is recognized that the wide scope and rapid development of existing and emerging nanotechnologies precludes definitive guidance that is applicable to all situations. However, the intended outcomes of the web-based dialogue include more rapid sharing of lessons learned, increased awareness of the opportunities to partner, and improved translation of industry experience and research results into practical application. NIOSH intends to state what the Institute knows and does not know. The dialogue page will present information that is "our current best advice" and the content will be updated as needed when new information is developed or made available. Topics for focus and discussion include toxicology and health effects, risk assessment, measurement and characterization, engineering controls, respiratory and other personal protection, and safety. Occupational applications include concerns for nanotechnology designers, manufacturers, systems integrators, suppliers, and users. Additional information about the NIOSH Nanotechnology Safety and Health Research Program and the Safe Practices Dialogue with NIOSH can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/nanotech/.
