Description:A Benchmate Workstation was incorporated into the development of a 2,4-D chlorophenoxy acid herbicide biological monitoring method. Procedures were developed for the translation and optimization of the method algorithim to robotic programs. Manual tube preparation was necessary before and after BenchMate operation. The BenchMate used statistically based experimental designs for method optimization. BenchMate performance monitoring, calibration, and maintenance techniques were developed. The BenchMate provided an electronic mass record of each sample preparation step. This record provided a data "audit trail" for analysis documentation as partial fulfillment of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988 (CLIA'88) requirements. This BenchMate and gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) method provided sensitive and accurate measurement of 2,4-D concentrations in the urine of agricultural herbicide applicators.
