  To be effective, the designer of a product or structure to be used in production agriculture must be aware of hazards found in agriculture. The designer must then evaluate and modify the design to eliminate or reduce the risks associated with those hazards. A review of the injury statistics is a first step, but the limitations of those statistics must also be known. This is the subject of unit I. A review of the accident statistics reveals the most common hazards in production agriculture. These hazards are presented in unit II. The discipline for analyzing the person in a man-machine system is called human factors. The person in this system serves as a controller with physical, physiological, and psychological limitations. These issues are the subject of unit III. Techniques for conducting a hazard analysis are presented in unit IV. Most products are designed using a well-defined product development sequence. During that development cycle, the issues of managing risk are addressed. The safety hierarchy is a model that is commonly used to manage risk. These issues are the subject of unit V.
