Description:A computerized data acquisition system utilizing real time instrumentation and a video taping system was used to identify activities that change worker exposures. The data acquisition system consisted of an appropriate real time monitor, a data logging element or personal computer, and a video taping system. The system was used in three studies: a study on manual weighout of powders in the rubber and plastics industry; a study on dust control during automotive brake servicing; and a study characterizing the emissions from the evaporative pattern casting process. In the first study, the system identified the scooping operation as the component of the work cycle which most affected the worker dust exposures; filter sampling could not isolate this element as the major cause of exposure. In the second study, several control devices were appraised and the work routines associated with each device assessed; the use of an air driven impact wrench was identified as a significant contributor to dust exposure levels. In the final study, metal pouring and casting shakeout were identified as the two activities requiring controls to contain contaminant emissions. The authors conclude that the successful use of the computerized data acquisition system shows that the system is versatile and provides more detailed information than traditional integrated sampling; the system can pinpoint hard to identify emission sources and activities so that controls can be modified or implemented.
