Description:Tests were carried out to determine the degree of correlation between results of tests for material dustiness and measurement of worker exposure to dust during a bag filling operation. The Heubach Dust Measurement Appliance and the Midwest Research Institute (MRI) Dustiness Tester were used to determine bulk material dustiness. Dust exposures for individual workers were measured in the packaging room of a powdered acrylic resin production line, where resin powders were auger fed into tuck in valve bags. There was a significant correlation between dustiness test results and geometric mean dust exposure. Regression equations were developed empirically for the prediction of dust exposure and dustiness test results. The authors conclude that dustiness test can be used to compare the relative potential of different materials to cause dust exposures. [Description provided by NIOSH]
