Generalized performance characteristics of miniature cyclones for atmospheric particulate sampling.

  • Description:
A study of generalized performance characteristics of miniature cyclones for atmospheric particulate sampling was conducted. Collected efficiency data for 30 miniature cyclones were fit to an empirical equation that expressed the Reynolds number (Re) at the cyclone outlet as a function of air density, air viscosity, cyclone outlet diameter, and air flow rate. The data were also fit to an equation for the ratio of the mass median aerodynamic particle diameter collected with 50 percent efficiency to the product of cyclone diameter times a dimensionless constant characteristic of each cyclone equal to the quotient, Re divided by 1000, raised to a negative empirical constant exponent (equation-B). The outlet Re values of the cyclones ranged from 500 to 50000. A single selected value of 0.830 for the exponent in equation-B gave a reasonably good fit for 27 cyclones. Plotting normalized particle size against cyclone efficiency on log probability paper yielded a single line that was straight over most of its length. The data for three cyclones obtained at temperatures of 93 and 204 degrees-C also fit the line closely. The author concludes that the generalized empirical equations and the method of plotting data on log probability paper should provide a simple method for describing cyclone performance that requires less experimental calibration and should facilitate selecting flow rates for any desired cut.
