Description:The ability of the SRRC precutter to function as a cotton dust sampler was evaluated. An SRRC precutter was modified by replacing the outlet tube with a ferrule that could accept a 37 millimeter filter cassette, and a short portion of the inlet end of the jet was reshaped as an axisymmetric funnel. Additional modifications included attaching the unit to an aluminum frame, attaching a four clamp system for easy loading and unloading of new and used adhesive tapes, utilizing a detachable impaction platform, and providing a grounded metal impaction platform in place of the usual plastic platform. Three jet sizes having nominal aerodynamic cutoffs of 15, 20, and 28 microns were used. The SRRC was tested in parallel with a vertical elutriator (VE) in an experimental card room while a large variety of cottons were being processed. Particle size distributions and the lint content of the collected dusts were determined. Mean dust concentrations measured by the SRRC were lower than those measured by the VE. When a plastic impaction platform was used, the data obtained with the SRRC were not statistically equivalent to the VE. When used with the largest jet size and a metal impaction platform, the SRRC obtained data that were statistically equivalent to the VE. Regression analysis showed that 67 percent of the mass/concentration ratio in the SRRC was due to the lint/count ratio. The lint/count ratio increased as the diameter of the jet increased. The particle size distributions obtained with the SRRC and VE were similar as long as the cotton lint was ignored. The authors conclude that the SRRC precutter can be modified to function as a sampler that is statistically equivalent to the VE. [Description provided by NIOSH]
