Description:The performance of organic vapor (OV) respirator cartridges was evaluated to determine if the Jonas kinetic model for characterizing small sorbent columns at low flow rates was applicable to OV respirator cartridges at high flow rates. The model predicted that the kinetic absorption capacity and gas adsorption rate of a packed charcoal sorbent could be described by a linear relationship between gas breakthrough time and sorbent weight. Acetone (67641) at concentrations of 530, 750, and 1060 parts per million was run through a laboratory setup that contained one to four OV cartridges in series. The cartridges were packed with various amounts of sorbent. The flow rate was 64 liters per minute. Times to 1 percent breakthrough were recorded. Plots of 1 percent breakthrough time versus cartridge sorbent weight were linear. The author concludes that the Jonas model is applicable for characterizing respirator cartridges at high flow rates. The test cell arrangement allows for the determination of multiple data point collections for each experimental run, ensuring cartridge sample integrity. [Description provided by NIOSH]
