Description:A simple effective design for a grinding booth suitable for large castings and portable hand held grinders was described. The authors point out that without proper ventilation, silica (60676860) dusts are generated during grinding of gray iron castings, resulting in silica dust concentrations in the immediate work environment that may exceed the threshold limit value (TLV). The function of the described booth was to prevent particles aerosolized during grinding from escaping to other parts of the workplace. Additionally, the booth contained an air flow field that directed particles to specific suction ports. In order to prevent respirable particles from traveling to other regions of the work place, it is recommended that the grinding procedure be performed as near to the plane of the suction ports as requirements of the job permit. Additionally, there must be no region of reverse flow at the entrance of the booth. Air velocities within the booth were systematically studied as functions of the geometry of the suction ports, recirculation jets, ventilation flow rate, and recirculation flow rate. An optimal design was determined with four suction ports and eight recirculation jets, all of specified size, location, and orientation. For this configuration, a booth face velocity of 0.51 meters/second was recommended, with a recirculation flow rate of no more than 25 percent of the exhaust flow rate.
