Endotoxin content in cottonseed oil mill dust.

  A survey of the endotoxin content of respirable cottonseed dust was conducted. Vertical elutriator cotton dust samples were obtained in nine cottonseed oil mills (SIC-2074) over a 2.5 year period. These were analyzed for their endotoxin content. The amounts of endotoxin found in the dust samples varied from 0.01 to 1.3 micrograms per milligram. The concentrations of endotoxin in the dust varied widely between and within the mills. This variation did not seem to be related to the amount of dust captured by the vertical elutriator samplers. In about 30 percent of the samples, airborne endotoxin concentrations exceeded 0.5 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3), the threshold for reducing the one second forced expiratory volume (FEV1). Endotoxin concentrations below 0.1microg/m3 were found in about 40 percent of the samples. The authors note that endotoxin was present in the respirable dust of all cottonseed oil mills surveyed. The amounts might be associated with weathering of the cotton plant in the field, harvesting variables, geographical origin of the crop, quality of the harvested cotton, and storage and processing variables at the mill.
