Description:A health hazard evaluation of nitrosamine exposures in a tire manufacturing facility (SIC-3011) in Maryland was conducted. Four site visits were made by NIOSH. Environmental and breathing zone samples collected in all areas of the facility were analyzed for N- nitrosomorpholine (59892) (I), N-nitrosodimethylamine (62759) (II), N-nitrosopyrrolidine (930552) (III), and N-nitrosodiphenylamine (86306) (IV). Blood, urine, and fecal samples were collected from 15 nonsmoking workers and analyzed for the nitrosamines. Urine samples were obtained from nine workers for mutagenicity testing by the Ames Salmonella test. Nitrosamines were detected in every area of the facility except for the guard house, located about 400 yards from the facility. One process sample from the feed mill contained 250 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3) (I). Maximum concentrations of (II) and (III) were found in the hot process areas and were 4.4 and 3.4microg/m3, respectively. One worker had a time weighted average exposure to (I) of 25microg/m3. Over the following 7 months, ventilation improvements and changes in chemical formulation of the rubber resulted in a 200 fold reduction in (I) concentrations and elimination or reduction of other nitrosamines at most sites. (IV) was detected in one process sample during the second survey and in two personal samples in the third survey. No nitrosamines were detected in any of the biological samples. None of the urine samples were mutagenic. The authors conclude that after the last survey, a worker under worst case conditions would inhale approximately 6.0microg of nitrosamines per shift, an exposure equivalent to eating a few strips of bacon and drinking a liter of beer.
